CBOs Struggle

At least in my part of the world, I have seen a shift in the viability of grass roots organizations – particularly charity based organizations – since the pandemic. Is this unique to my area or are others seeing the same? I worry, because they are really the trusted “go to” agencies for most vulnerable populations in my community.

I know that the safety net is quite broad, especially those services provided by local government agencies, but frankly, people just don’t trust government AND the system is so difficult to navigate that people easily fall through the cracks or just give up of getting help. CBOs are a necessary part of any community – they help connect by providing that personal touch that other agencies just cannot provide.

Communities really need to take a look at their CBOs and do their best to help build capacity. Things like board member training, financial management, grant writing, grant management build skills for CBO staff and help sustain them.

Make this a priority in your community. Your residents will prosper.
